First school post of the semester

Here it is! The assignment was to create a line drawing of a character(s) and color it in Photoshop. So I used a couple of characters from a story idea I came up with recently. I hadn't really rendered them fully as of yet, so it was fun to put them down in a final form.

Enjoy!

Class this Semester

Hi Everybody! This semester I'm taking a digital painting class, so I will shortly have some interesting Photoshop and later Painter projects to upload. I'm very excited to get into the nitty gritty, so far we've been practicing basic Photoshop tricks, but this week we start painting. I have a small character study and a Olympic postage stamp idea coming down the pike. More to follow.

New Job

Everyday now, my oldest boy has been asking me to make him a dinosaur drawing while I'm at work. He picks one from his dinosaur TV show (Dinotrain, it's cute) and waits for the results when I get home. Here is today's: Stygimoloch.

Chinese Landscape

I can't believe I forgot to post this. I was at a nice Chinese restaurant for my dept. Xmas party and I had received my leftovers and we were all sitting around like idiots waiting on the off-chance that our VP would grace us with a speech. I had started doodling with my gel pen on the top of my carryout container, inspired by the art hanging in the restaurant. Here it is! I would draw then smear the ink, over and over to create the brushed look. The top one is actual size. BTW, I was the first person to leave. Right after I finished this to be exact!

My First Watercolor and an Update

Hi all, I've been working on school steadily(next post, sculpture!), along with practicing comics and actually a lot of other stuff I should scan and post up here. Anyhoo, the point is, I did a nifty little watercolor for my wife to try out a new paint set I bought a few months ago that has been terrifying me. So I sucked it up and did a 4x6 painting of Disney's Wilderness Lodge(our favorite vacation spot). It was actually a cool time doing it, and I will look around for something else to try.

In other news, I "finished" my 5 page comic sampler and sent it to the only major publisher still accepting open submissions-Dark Horse. Well, they didn't reply so, I'm going to keep working and trying some new things. Or in this case an old thing. I picked back up on my work on Tharn's Warcraft story. Follow the Grym Tiding's link to the right to check out the newest addition. I decided to put it out in easy to digest strips rather than trying to bang out pages at a time. Instead of making excuses not to work, I'm trying to make it easier TO work. So far so good. Keep moving forward mule. Yah Mule!

Enjoy,

Holy Cow! It's page 5!!

Yes, yes, I've finally managed to drag 5 pages of comic-y goodness into existence. Next step is to start showing it around. I've started some research into who I need to talk to and what I need to present, so I will be busy putting together PDFs and brief synopsisesiess...however it's plural! I'm excited, but mostly frightened. Wish me luck!

This week's assignment

This is my assignment from last week, which was a layout featuring 2 point perspective. In all these assignments I try to make the perspective-y stuff secondary to whatever is going on, I dunno, I just like the human element and they don't have a lot of corners! This week I will have to put in all the tones and shadows with my grey markers, which I've gotten pretty comfortable with. They ain't so bad! Anyhoo, in the scene the young speedster has wrapped his '63 Austin Healey around the tree and the farm guy is pulling him from the wreckage. I did something fun with the car: I got some reference shots and drew one in the position I would need it in the layout. Then I tracing papered over it all the wreckage, then I applied that to the layout and used my microns over THAT layer! It took a while, but man, I'm happy with the results!

Enjoy!

EDIT: Hey hey! Here is the finished version, markered and ready to roll. In the end I went in a completely different direction then I intended from the beginning. Please, continue to...

Enjoy!
